TEAL INLET- East Falkland Settlement
Teal Inlet is a settlement in the north-east of East Falkland, on the south shore of Salvador Water and backed by hills and mountains to the south-west. John James Felton, a son of Sergeant- Major Henry Felton of the Life Guards, who came to the Falklands in 1849, took out a lease on Teal Inlet in 1871 and started the farm in naming it ‘Evelyn Station’ after one of his daughters. Later it was called ‘Teal Inlet’. In 1913 Teal Inlet was connected to the telephone line.
Troops was used as a harbour of refuge for 11th MCM Squadron ships to shelter from air attacks by day during the final assault on Stanley during the Falklands War in 1982. A section of troops from the bridgehead at San Carlos water travelled by Teal Inlet.
Teal Inlet was subdivided into four sections and sold as smaller individual farms; Hope Cottage, Teal Inlet, Evelyn Station, and Malo now renamed Riverview.

The Past
The 'Old Settlement' or 'Second Corral', dating back to the 1800's wild cattle hunting days, at Punta Fria, Rodeo Point had a very substantial turf wall built across the point with stone walls running down to the low tide mark at each end to stop animals from escaping. (Falkland Rural Heritage- Joan Spruce with Natalie Smith).
A severe accident has happened at Teal Inlet to little Bella Pearson, who set herself alight while playing with matches, unknown to her parents. She is still in a critical condition but we hope soon to hear of substantial progress towards recovery. F I Magazine
Bella did recover. She was maid at Fox Bay East for Mrs Clement for many years, moving to Stanley with the Clement family when they retired. |
